SEO Strategies That Work in 2026: My Exact Client Playbook

The SEO strategies that work in 2026 come down to three moves: build the most complete website in your market, make every page easy for Google and AI tools to read and trust, and measure booked work instead of rankings. I’m M. Curtis McCoy. I have built websites since 1995, three years before Google existed, and these are the nine SEO strategies I run on client sites like Pencil Log Pros, Frontier Log Homes and Best Cellular.

Want to know which of these your website is missing? Run the free Website Analyzer and see exactly what is holding your site back.

Someone asked me a simple question: “What are your strategies for SEO?” Most answers to that question are a list of SEO strategies anyone could copy from a blog. Mine is different, because every strategy below came out of a real website, a real problem and a real result. Some of these projects got strange. A song. A hacked site with hundreds of pages to save. An Analytics account nobody on earth could log into. Here is what I learned.

Why Most SEO Strategies Stopped Working in 2026

Most SEO strategies still chase clicks on searches that no longer produce clicks. Google now answers many questions directly on the results page, and the data is clear about what that does to traffic.

  • A Pew Research Center study found people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not (Pew Research Center).
  • The same study found AI summaries showed up on 60% of searches that start with “who,” “what,” “when” or “why.”
  • A randomized 2026 field experiment found AI Overviews cut organic clicks by 38% on the searches where they appeared (Search Engine Journal).

So I build every plan around two goals. First, win the searches where people still click: branded searches, local searches and searches from buyers ready to hire. Second, get cited inside the AI answer on the searches where nobody clicks. If you want the bigger picture on whether search is still worth the effort, read Does SEO Still Matter in 2026?

SEO Strategy 1: Plan Every Page Before You Design One

The first SEO strategy is a page inventory, written before anyone opens a design tool. I never build one-page websites. A one-page site gives Google one URL to rank and gives an AI tool one paragraph to quote for every question a buyer could ask.

Every build starts with a list: one page per service, one page per town or region served, and one article per real buyer question. Each line gets a primary keyword, the buyer’s intent and the pages it should link to.

Example: When I rebuilt Pencil Log Pros, the log home restoration company led by Brad Siler, the plan included a service page for every profitable specialty and location pages across two states. The site stopped being a brochure and became the most complete log home restoration resource in its region. You can read the full story in the Pencil Log Pros case study.

SEO Strategy 2: Target Buyers, Not Traffic

Traffic that never buys is a cost, not a win. The best SEO strategies pick keywords by who searches them, not only by how many people search them.

Here is a live example: this article. I measured the options in Ubersuggest (United States, October 2026) before writing a word.

Keyword Searches/mo Difficulty Decision
seo strategy 6,600 72 Too hard for now
seo strategies 4,400 69 Long-term target
seo strategies examples 320 19 Winnable now
ai seo strategies 170 56 Buyers: $84 a click

That last row matters most. When advertisers pay $84 for one click, the people searching are buyers. A page that ranks for 170 searches like that can be worth more than a page that ranks for 6,600 curious ones. Most agencies show you the big number. I show you the buyer number.

SEO Strategy 3: Write Every Location Page From Scratch

Location pages win local searches only when each one is genuinely different. Pages that swap a town name into the same template are exactly what Google’s spam policies call scaled content, and they rarely rank for long.

On Pencil Log Pros, only three things come from the template: the location name, the Google Maps link and a short answer block. Everything else is written for that town. The pages talk about elevation, UV exposure, freeze-thaw cycles and the local conditions that actually damage a log home there. A log home owner in the mountains reads that page and knows the company understands their house. Google and AI tools read the same thing.

If you serve more than one town, this is one of the highest-return SEO strategies you can run. It is also one of the most work, which is exactly why your competitors skip it. More on this in Local SEO services.

SEO Strategy 4: Let AI Crawlers In (Most Sites Lock Them Out by Accident)

Your website cannot be quoted by ChatGPT, Claude or Google’s Gemini if their crawlers are blocked from reading it. Many business owners are blocked right now and have no idea.

Here is how it happens. If your site runs through Cloudflare and someone turned on its managed robots.txt setting, Cloudflare adds its own block rules in front of yours. Those rules can tell GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and other AI crawlers to stay out. Because Cloudflare puts its rules first, the settings inside your SEO plugin can say “allow” while the live file says “block” (Cloudflare documentation).

I check the live robots.txt file on every site I manage, not the settings screen. It takes two minutes, and it is the first thing I check before any AI visibility work begins. Google says the same thing in plain language: make sure crawling is allowed in robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting provider (Google Search Central).

SEO Strategy 5: Make Your Business One Clear Entity

Search engines and AI tools do not rank websites as much as they recognize things: a person, a company, a place. This SEO strategy makes sure they recognize yours, every time, with the same facts.

  • One name, everywhere. The same business name, phone number and service area on the website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps and every directory.
  • One home base. One page that defines who the business or person is, with links out to every real profile.
  • Connected, not tangled. On client sites, the article author is the client’s company. My name appears as the contributor and links back here, so the credit is clear without confusing whose business it is.

Pencil Log Pros publicly credits me as Developer and SEO on its own website. That kind of public, verifiable connection is exactly what AI tools use to decide who is credible on a topic.

SEO Strategy 6: Answer First, Then Mark It Up

AI tools quote the clearest answer they can find, and they tend to find it near the top of the page. Answer-first writing is one of the few SEO strategies that pays off on Google and in AI answers at the same time. So every page I write opens with a short, direct answer that can stand alone, like the bold paragraph at the top of this article.

Then every heading gets answered in its first sentence. Then the page gets structured data: Article, FAQ and Speakable markup added through Rank Math PRO, so Google understands what the page is and who wrote it.

Here is the honest part most agencies leave out. Google says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Schema helps Google understand the page. The visible text is what gets quoted. I do both, in that order. If you want the details, start with What Is Schema Markup and the AEO Checklist.

SEO Strategy 7: Build Tools, Not Just Pages

An article answers a question once. A tool answers it for every visitor, earns links and turns strangers into named leads. This is one of the SEO strategies I use most, because almost nobody else does it.

Example one: For Pencil Log Pros, I built the Log Home Repair Estimator. Homeowners describe the project, upload photos and get a ballpark estimate. They arrive curious and leave as qualified leads before a crew member spends a minute on them.

Example two: My own Website Analyzer scans a business website and shows the owner what is holding it back. It answers the question every owner has (“what’s wrong with my site?”) better than any article could.

SEO Strategy 8: Create Branded Searches People Actually Click

When someone searches your company by name, they click. AI Overviews rarely steal that click, because the searcher already chose you. So one of my favorite SEO strategies is creating more of those searches.

For Pencil Log Pros, that meant something no other marketer would try: an original song, “High Country Life,” written and produced to promote the company. It earned radio play and social reach, and it sends people to search for Pencil Log Pros by name. Add steady five-star reviews (5.0 across 99+ verified reviews on their site) and media features, and the brand becomes the obvious name in its market.

The result is the only metric that matters to an owner. Pencil Log Pros had to hire more crews because the new business was more than the existing crews could handle.

SEO Strategy 9: Protect What Already Ranks

The fastest way to lose years of SEO work is a careless rebuild, a hacked server or a migration that deletes the pages Google already trusts. Protecting rankings belongs in your SEO strategies from day one, not after something breaks.

Example: Best Cellular is a wireless reference site I built, online since 1998, with hundreds of pages and carrier information for more than 220 U.S. carriers. At its peak it drew more than 250,000 visitors a month. After an attack, a former server administrator took it offline. The easy move would have been restoring the old copy. That would have brought the infection back with it.

Instead, we are rebuilding it clean on a secure install and carrying the legitimate content over, page by page, from the original files and archived copies. The rules I follow on every rebuild:

  1. Build the new site on a private staging server, hidden from search engines.
  2. Carry over every page that ranks or earns links. Never delete first.
  3. Redirect every old address that changes to its closest new page.
  4. Never publish a claim the business cannot prove.

How I Measure Whether SEO Strategies Are Working

Rankings are a means, not the result. The only fair way to judge SEO strategies is by the business they produce. I measure phone calls, form submissions and booked work, and I tie them to the pages that produced them.

Example: When I started with Frontier Log Homes, its Google Analytics account belonged to a former developer nobody could reach, and nobody had admin access. Every decision was being made blind. So I created a new Analytics property owned by the business, connected it through Rank Math, and set up the two events that matter most: form submissions and phone-number clicks. Now every lead traces back to the page and the search that produced it.

On top of that, I track the buyer questions a business wants to be named for in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews, and how often it actually gets named. That is how you know whether AI visibility is real or just a promise. You can see how I report this on the Results page.

Why I Run Every Site on Rank Math PRO Instead of Yoast SEO

I build every client site on Rank Math PRO. Yoast SEO is a respected plugin that runs on millions of websites, and plenty of good sites use it. For running the SEO strategies in this article, Rank Math PRO is the better tool, for five reasons:

  1. More keywords per page. Rank Math’s free version checks a page against up to five focus keywords, and PRO removes the limit. Yoast’s free version checks one, and Premium checks up to five.
  2. Redirects included. Rank Math includes a redirection manager and a 404 monitor at no extra cost. With Yoast, the redirect manager is a Premium feature. Redirects are how rebuilds like Best Cellular keep their rankings.
  3. Real schema control. Rank Math PRO lets me attach several schema types to one page and build custom schema, all editable later from the same panel on that post.
  4. Analytics inside WordPress. Search Console and Google Analytics data, rank tracking and keyword performance live in the dashboard where the work happens.
  5. One license, many sites. Rank Math PRO covers unlimited personal websites under one license. Yoast Premium is priced per site.

Independent testing has also measured Rank Math making fewer database calls and using less memory than Yoast (TechEarl). On a site where speed affects rankings, that adds up.

SEO Strategies I Refuse to Use

What I won’t do says as much about my SEO strategies as what I will.

  • Bought link networks. They can earn a short spike and a long penalty.
  • One-page websites. One URL cannot answer fifty buyer questions.
  • Copy-and-paste city pages. Google treats them as spam, and buyers can tell.
  • AI-written filler. Pages padded to hit a word count read like nobody wrote them, and nobody trusts them.
  • Traffic reports with no leads. If a report never mentions calls, forms or booked work, it is measuring the wrong thing.

Which SEO Strategy Should You Start With?

The right SEO strategies to start with depend on how your business gets customers. Start here:

Your business Start with Then
Local service company (contractor, plumber, restoration) Strategy 3: unique location pages, plus a complete Google Business Profile Strategy 8: reviews and branded searches
Professional practice (doctor, lawyer, dentist) Strategy 5: one clear entity with consistent credentials Strategy 6: answer-first pages for every patient or client question
National brand or online business Strategy 1: a full page inventory around buyer intent Strategy 7: a tool that earns links and leads
Any site that already ranks Strategy 9: protect what works before changing anything Strategy 4: confirm AI crawlers can read it

SEO Strategies: Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most effective SEO strategies in 2026?

The most effective SEO strategies in 2026 are a complete page plan built around buyer questions, answer-first content that AI tools can quote, and a clear business identity across the web. Add unique location pages for local businesses. Measure leads, not rankings.

What are some examples of SEO strategies that work?

Unique location pages, interactive tools like a repair estimator, and campaigns that create branded searches are all proven examples of SEO strategies that work. Pencil Log Pros used all three and had to hire more crews to keep up with demand.

What is the best SEO strategy for a small business?

For most small businesses, the best SEO strategy is owning local searches: a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews, and a unique page for each service and each town served. It costs less than chasing national keywords and brings buyers who are ready to hire.

Do SEO strategies change for AI search like ChatGPT?

The foundation stays the same, but the finish changes. AI tools need to be allowed to crawl your site, and they quote short, direct answers near the top of a page. Learn the difference in AEO vs SEO.

How long does an SEO strategy take to work?

Most SEO strategies show early movement within weeks on technical fixes and new pages. Competitive rankings and AI citations usually build over several months. Anyone promising guaranteed rankings by a date is guessing.

Is SEO still worth it with AI Overviews?

Yes. AI Overviews cut clicks on informational searches, but branded, local and ready-to-buy searches still earn clicks, and AI tools pull heavily from pages that already rank. Good SEO strategies are the foundation that makes AI visibility possible.
