AI Search Optimization: How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI

AI search optimization is the work of getting your business named, quoted and recommended by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity when buyers ask who to hire. It rests on four things: AI crawlers can read your site, your pages already rank in normal search, your answers are short and specific enough to quote, and the rest of the web talks about you. I’m M. Curtis McCoy, and this is the exact AI search optimization process I run on client websites.

Can AI tools even read your website? Run the free Website Analyzer. It checks whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI can read your site, and shows what is in the way.

Buyers used to type three words into Google and scroll. Now they ask a full question, like “who’s the best log home restoration company near Telluride?”, and an AI tool answers with two or three names. If yours isn’t one of them, you never get the call. You never even know you lost it.

What Is AI Search Optimization?

AI search optimization means making your business the answer AI tools give. You will also see it called AI SEO, artificial intelligence search engine optimization, answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO). The names differ. The goal is the same: be the business the machine recommends.

Traditional SEO earns a link on a results page. AI search optimization earns a mention inside the answer itself. The two overlap more than most agencies admit, which is why I treat them as one system. For the definitions in detail, see What Is Answer Engine Optimization and What Is Generative Engine Optimization.

Why AI Search Optimization Matters Right Now

AI answers are taking clicks that used to go to websites, and the businesses named inside those answers keep the attention.

  • A Pew Research Center study of real browsing data found people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary, versus 15% without one (Pew Research Center).
  • The same study found AI summaries appeared on 60% of searches that start with “who,” “what,” “when” or “why.” Those are exactly the questions buyers ask before they hire.
  • Demand for help is real. Ubersuggest shows 8,100 monthly US searches for “artificial intelligence search engine optimization” and advertisers paying about $60 a click for “ai search optimization” (October 2026). Advertisers don’t pay that for curiosity.

The takeaway is simple. AI search optimization is no longer a future project. Your competitors are either being recommended right now, or the field is still open. Either way, the time to move is now.

How AI Tools Decide Who to Recommend

AI tools recommend businesses they can read, find in search results, and see mentioned across the web. Each one gets its information a little differently:

AI tool Crawler to allow Where answers come from
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Googlebot Google’s own search index and ranking systems
Gemini apps Google-Extended Google’s index, plus pages it is allowed to use
ChatGPT search OAI-SearchBot Web search plus pages OpenAI’s search crawler can read
Claude Claude-SearchBot and ClaudeBot Web search when it looks things up
Perplexity PerplexityBot Its own index of crawled pages

Two facts matter most. OpenAI says plainly that sites which block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI). And Google says its AI features rely on its core ranking systems, so normal SEO still decides most of who appears (Google Search Central).

The AI Search Optimization Process I Run on Client Sites

Every engagement follows the same seven steps, in this order. Skipping the early steps is why most “AI SEO” projects produce nothing.

Step 1: Open the Doors to AI Crawlers

The first step of AI search optimization is confirming the tools can get in. Many sites block AI crawlers without the owner knowing.

The most common cause I find is Cloudflare. Its managed robots.txt setting can add rules that block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and other AI crawlers, and it places those rules in front of the ones your SEO plugin writes (Cloudflare documentation). Your settings screen says “allow.” The live file says “block.” I check the live file on every site, every time.

Step 2: Rank in Regular Search First

AI search optimization starts with traditional SEO, not instead of it. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode pull from pages Google already ranks, and other AI tools use web search to find sources.

That means the foundation is the same work I describe in SEO Strategies That Work in 2026: a full page plan, a page for every service and town, fast and crawlable pages, and content that answers real buyer questions. A site that ranks nowhere is rarely the site an AI tool recommends.

Step 3: Make Your Content Readable Without JavaScript

Some AI crawlers read only the raw HTML of a page. If your important content or links only appear after JavaScript runs, those crawlers may see an empty box.

Example: Best Cellular is a wireless reference site I built that covers more than 220 US carriers. When I tested it with my Website Analyzer, ChatGPT and Claude cited it in 0 of 6 answers to carrier questions the site answers in detail. The cause was on the home page: the grid linking to the 12 most-searched carriers was drawn by JavaScript after the page loaded. In the raw HTML, that grid was empty. I put the 12 links directly into the page code, so every crawler now sees them. Visitors notice no difference. The re-test runs after the crawlers revisit.

This is the kind of problem no plugin score will show you. You find it by looking at what the crawler actually receives.

Step 4: Write Answers AI Can Lift Word for Word

AI tools quote the clearest, most specific answer they can find. So every page I write opens with a short paragraph that answers the main question on its own, then answers every heading in its first sentence.

Specifics win. “We serve the area” gives an AI tool nothing to quote. “Media blasting, chinking and staining for log homes in Telluride, Crested Butte and the Western Slope” does. Best Cellular states which of the three US networks each carrier actually runs on, in one plain sentence per carrier. That is exactly the shape of content AI tools like to repeat.

Step 5: Make Your Business One Unmistakable Entity

AI tools recommend things they can identify with confidence: a specific company, a specific person, a specific place. Mixed signals make you easy to skip.

  • The same facts everywhere. Identical business name, phone number and service area on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps and every directory.
  • One home page for the entity. A clear about page and structured data that ties your business to its real profiles.
  • Clean credit on shared work. On Frontier Log Homes, the articles credit Frontier Log Homes as author and publisher, and my name appears as contributor, linked back to my own site. The client owns the authority. The connection is still clear.

Step 6: Get Talked About Off Your Website

This is the step most AI search optimization advice skips, and the data says it matters most. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found brand mentions across the web correlated with AI visibility at about 0.66 to 0.71, and YouTube mentions at about 0.74. Domain Rating, the classic backlink score, correlated at only about 0.27 to 0.33 (Ahrefs).

In plain English: being talked about beats being linked to.

Example: For Pencil Log Pros, the log home restoration company led by Brad Siler, we built mentions on purpose. A feature in News Wire Magazine. A steady stream of verified reviews, 5.0 across 99+ on their site. And an original song, “High Country Life,” that earned radio play and gets people searching the company by name. Every one of those is a mention an AI tool can find. The full story is in the Pencil Log Pros case study.

Step 7: Measure AI Visibility, Not Just Rankings

You can’t improve what you don’t measure, and AI visibility needs its own measurement. I track three things:

  1. A fixed set of buyer questions. The 10 to 20 questions a client wants to be named for, asked regularly in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI results, logging who gets named each time.
  2. AI referral traffic. A Google Analytics channel that separates visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot from ordinary referrals.
  3. Leads. Form submissions and phone clicks tied to the pages that produced them. Visibility that never turns into a call is a vanity number.

AI answers change from one run to the next, so I report how often a business is named across many questions, not a single screenshot.

AI Search Optimization Tactics That Don’t Work

Half the “AI SEO” advice online is guesswork sold as strategy. Here is what I skip, and why:

  • llms.txt files as a ranking trick. Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features (Google Search Central).
  • Schema as a magic switch. Structured data helps search engines understand a page. It does not force an AI tool to quote you. I add it because it is good practice, not because it is a shortcut.
  • Chopping pages into fragments “for AI.” Google’s guidance says chunking content isn’t needed. Write complete, useful pages.
  • Hidden instructions aimed at AI tools. Text written to manipulate AI answers violates Google’s spam policies. It’s a fast way to lose everything.
  • Promises of “#1 in ChatGPT.” AI answers vary run to run. Anyone guaranteeing a permanent top spot is selling something they can’t control.

AI Search Optimization vs Traditional SEO

Question Traditional SEO AI search optimization
What you win A link on a results page A mention inside the answer
Biggest lever Rankings and links Rankings plus mentions across the web
Content shape Complete pages Complete pages that open with a quotable answer
Technical gate Googlebot can crawl Every AI crawler can read the raw HTML
How you measure Positions and clicks How often you are named, plus leads

They aren’t rivals. Good SEO is the foundation that makes AI search optimization possible. The longer comparison is in AEO vs SEO.

Do You Need AI Search Optimization Services?

You need help with AI search optimization if a lost customer is worth real money and your site fails any of the first three steps above. Most sites I scan fail at least one.

You can do some of this yourself: check your live robots.txt file, tighten your page openings, and make your business details match everywhere. The harder parts are finding what crawlers actually see, building mentions that AI tools trust, and measuring visibility honestly. That is where an expert pays for itself.

If you want it handled end to end, see my answer engine optimization services and generative engine optimization services. If you want to know where you stand first, run the free Website Analyzer.

AI Search Optimization: Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization is the work of getting a business named and quoted in answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. It combines crawler access, strong traditional SEO, quotable answers and mentions across the web.

Is AI SEO the same as AI search optimization?

Yes. AI SEO, AI search optimization, artificial intelligence search engine optimization, answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization all describe the same goal: being the business AI tools recommend.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Allow OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, rank well in normal search, open your pages with clear answers, and earn mentions on other trusted sites. More detail is in How to Rank on ChatGPT.

Does schema markup help AI search optimization?

Schema helps search engines understand your page, but Google says no special markup is required to appear in its AI features. Use it as good practice, not as a shortcut.

How long does AI search optimization take to work?

Fixing crawler access can matter as soon as the crawlers revisit, often within weeks. Earning steady mentions in AI answers usually takes months, because it depends on rankings and mentions that build over time.

How do I know if AI tools can read my website?

Check your live robots.txt file and your raw page HTML, or run the free Website Analyzer, which checks access for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI in one scan.

Get Your Business Named by AI

AI search optimization rewards the businesses that move first and measure honestly.
